The Development of the Department

The up to date treatment of the chronic pain started in our Institute in 1981. november. Dr. Embey-Isztin board certified anaesthetist worked in the Department of Anaesthesiology of the Medical University Strasbourg during a period of one year (01. oct. 1980. – 01. november, 1981.) He worked six months in the Pain Clinic. Having returned from France he started to perform the sophisticated nerve blocks to releive drug resistent cancer pain, mainly afternoon or late evening besides working as anaesthetist in the operating theatre and intensive care unit.

Since october 1988. Dr. Embey has been working full time in the Pain Clinic of our Institute. It was the first officially recognised Pain Clinic in Hungary.

The infrastructure of our Pain Center the follows:
Two rooms for consultation
One operating theatre equipped the most sophisticated C arm image intensifier and radiofrequency generator.
One room with three bads to follow up the patients after nerve blockades.
Most of the blockades performed outpatient, except the celiac plexus block and longterm epidural catheter implantations, after that a short hospitalization is needed.

Successfully treated pain syndromes are the follows:
Cancer pain Low back pain
Radicular pain due to cervical, thoracic, and lumbar disk herniation.
Articular pain:shoulder, hip, knee
Neuropathic pain:shingles / herpes zoster/, polyneuropathy, central post-stroke pain, trigeminal pain, atypical facial pain ischemic pain /upper and lower limb/.
Sport injuries
Pain following trauma and surgical interventions

The first introduced therapeutic interventions in Hungary the follows

1. Neurolytic peripheral nerve blocks
2. Intrathecal neurolysis (chemical rhizotomy)
3. The implantation of a cervical epidural catheter
4. The single shot cortizon injection into the cervical epidurals space
5. Longterm epidural opiat analgesia with steril catheter implantation
6. Neurolytic ganglion stellate block
7. Neurolytic celiac plexus block
8. Neurolytic lumbar sympathetic block (percutaneous sympathectomy)
9. Epidural hypertonic saline, local anaesthetic and cortizon injection via segmental intraduced catheter to releive pain due to vertebral metastases
10. Continuous, subcutaneous morphin administration with seringe pump to releive cancer pain as home treatment
